Capturing Crash Forensics with TrueView Handheld and Drone LiDAR Technology

Watch the GeoCue Team in Action at Drone Demo Day from the 2024 Commercial UAV Expo

The GeoCue team, alongside Brady Reisch from The LiDAR Pros, had a productive and successful day at the 2024 Commercial UAV Expo, showcasing the innovative capabilities of the TrueView 535 and the all-new TrueView GO handheld 3D imaging LiDAR sensor. The well-attended event drew significant interest, with many attendees inquiring about the new TrueView GO after the live demonstration. See for yourself in the video below:

The demo, titled From Scene to Screen: Capturing Crash Forensics with TrueView Handheld and Drone LiDAR Technology, highlighted how cutting-edge LiDAR technology can enhance forensic car crash investigations. In real-world scenarios, forensic experts must prioritize emergency aid for injured parties, analyze the accident scene to determine the cause, and quickly clear the area to resume normal traffic. During all of this, they must also ensure their own safety. The demonstration at the UAV Expo emphasized how TrueView technology can accelerate and optimize this process.

GeoCue and The LiDAR Pros showcased the combined power of aerial and handheld LiDAR for forensic accident investigation. Using an Inspired Flight IF800 Tomcat equipped with the TrueView 535 and the new TrueView GO 116S handheld SLAM sensor, the team demonstrated how to rapidly and precisely capture an entire crash scene. The TrueView 535 provided aerial data, while the TrueView GO collected terrestrial data, enabling the creation of a real-time point cloud—a detailed 3D Forensic Digital Twin that mirrors the actual crash scene.

Brady Reisch, piloting the Inspired Flight IF800 with the TrueView 535, captured a bird’s-eye view of the accident. Meanwhile, Aaron Beach, equipped with the TrueView GO, scanned the scene from the ground. This combination of aerial and terrestrial LiDAR ensured comprehensive coverage of the crash site, documenting every critical detail with precision.

The real-time point cloud generated from the captured data not only provides a 3D model for photogrammetric analysis but also allows forensic experts to quickly measure distances, identify key evidence like skid marks, vehicle positions, and other scene elements, and perform thorough forensic analysis post-incident. This efficient approach minimizes the time officers and investigators spend in potentially dangerous environments, ensuring their safety while securing all necessary data. With GeoCue’s technology, law enforcement, and forensic teams can quickly gather comprehensive evidence, allowing for better decision-making during investigations and reducing the time needed to reopen roads. As the demonstration concluded, many attendees were eager to learn more about the new TrueView GO, impressed by its potential to revolutionize forensic investigations and other applications.

The 2024 Commercial UAV Expo was a clear success for GeoCue and The LiDAR Pros, showcasing the future of forensic analysis with powerful, easy-to-use LiDAR technology that enhances both the quantity and quality of collected evidence while keeping public safety officials safe.
